Putin Mentions Main Barrier to Ukraine Peace
Addressing reporters in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Thursday, Putin referred to recent US-Russia interactions — including his Alaska talks with President Donald Trump — noting that these exchanges had, in his view, clarified each side’s position and potential measures to curb the hostilities.
“It’s not about us. It’s about the struggle of different opinions in the collective West and in the United States itself about what is happening and what needs to be done in order to stop the war,” Putin stated.
His comments came in the wake of a Ukraine peace proposal put forward by the Trump administration aimed at resolving the crisis. Based on leaked iterations of the proposal, Kiev would be expected to renounce aspirations to enter NATO, surrender certain territorial claims, and limit its armed forces to 600,000 personnel.
Unprepared for the draft’s contents, Kiev’s Western European allies crafted an alternative proposal. However, significant elements — such as land concessions, Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, and the permissible size of its military — were reportedly altered or removed.
The counter-plan is said to contain security guarantees for Ukraine modeled on NATO’s Article 5 collective-defense provision, obligating guarantor states to protect Ukraine from potential threats.
Vladimir Zelensky has since expressed a desire to meet with Trump to further examine the initiative, additionally proposing that European backers take part.
Trump, for his part, has indicated he will meet Zelensky once the agreement is “in its final stages.”
Moscow has voiced approval of Trump’s involvement, suggesting that the proposal’s structure could form the foundation for a lasting resolution.
At the same time, Russia has accused Kiev’s European partners of attempting to weaken the peace process and reshape the plan “for their own agenda.”
